DE (HOUDINI): Tell us about D’Angelo Black the project and who you are as an individual. What’s a day in the life like?
D’Angelo Black: The project behind D’Angelo Black is mainly working and trying to achieve a mark in the edm community. To create music that tells a story while also packing in the energy of a dance track. There really isn’t a typical day for me, but when I do have one it includes my set up with sunflower seeds, bombay, and some fine SF medicinal herbs. After that’s it’s about bringing the bass and hard riffs to the party scene at night. Everyday is a rat race when you try to balance the love of music and the harsh realities of twenty-twelve.
Who are your biggest influences as an artist?
Metallica, definitely. Grew up listening to them as a baby and the construction of their songs are just all time classics and will always be something to dissect and study. Of course I have a TON of other influences but that might take a couple years too long. I appreciate artist who really put in the effort to make something unique rather than the same tiring radio formula.
What’s it like being a musician on the grind in San Francisco?
Hmmm.. This is an interesting time for San Francisco with the edm scene being so massive and public. EPR is every Wednesday and a lot of great acts come through. Recently Dillon Francis and 12th planet Tore up the stage with some great openers. Seeing the scene grow in the bay area is interesting though. A lot more people are coming out to these shoes and the crowds are getting a lot bigger. Filled with people who appreciate good music and the posers just wanting a taste of the drug filled culture. Overall there are still great shows and secret gigs that have the BEST music and djs. The city is always great inspiration also, I’ve met some of the kindest and sickest people in some of the craziest corners and it’s always amazing meeting these new faces and rockin out… I definitely feel blessed and lucky to live in such an amazing place. Im just having fun and trying to make a stamp in this age of edm music.
What’s the next step for you? More releases? Touring? Videos?
I’ll be releasing some more tracks within the next couple months and I’m in the process of writing a video for my song “Daisy Murks”. Other than that I’ve been putting all my energy into a joint EP with a great friend that’s guaranteed to blow your moms panties off! Expect some amazing production and bass lines that’ll echo through your head for days..
What’s the craziest show you’ve played? Tell us about some of the weirdest, coolest, funniest things you’ve seen in the business.
Oh man! SF is a fucking zoo man! Jesus.. My craziest set has to be at “TH? ???”. Just to find this place it took some connects and a select amount only new where the actual place was. The rest had to find out from friends of friends and the whole thing was really just kept secret… The bar didn’t require ids and you could get whatever you needed because the place was a damn zoo. I was playing and this strung out guy got on stage and jumped on my back while playing and would not let go! He also had a bottle of Andre in his hand and was spilling this shit all over the controllers and laptop. In the end I slipped on this cheap liqueur and fell straight back and knocked the guy out completely! I think he was just smashed but either way, he wasn’t awake. The “security” who had also been drinking just hauled the guy out once they saw that no one was even playing for a good minute. I’ve had my share of adventures in the city and it only continues to get crazier and I’ve learned to never turn your back on the city… Even for a second!

Ummmm, I’m sorry but that was awful! Everybody being able to post songs on the Internet allows nobody to filter out the crap. Everybody is now a DJ. Everybody is now a rock star. This sounds like something that I made with my first keyboard when I was eight.
That’s your opinion. We don’t believe it’s crap. No one said he’s a rock star. He’s just a young artist on the grind. If you really believe you can make something better, than do it! Don’t just be that hater behind a computer. It’s sad to read comments like yours.
yet again a great interview
